Satellite Primos 2019-20

The Los Primos Project has been offering small ensembles classes for 20 years. Motivated students, rehearsing in small ensembles directed  by Jeff Goodspeed, and other professional musicians, learn to play music in all styles and learn to improvise with ease. When the first few groups from our project went to Cuba, they became known as the Canadian Primos. They went on to gain notoriety from their standing-ovation performances at the Atlantic Jazz Festival and their energetic dance sets at the Dance for All Ages.

This year we will have 2 Satellite Primos groups.  Sign up for a Satellite Band

Mondays - 7 to 9 - Waverly Primos

Wednesdays - 6:30 to 8:30 - Dartmouth Primos

What to expect

A small band of eight to twelve students is the best size to teach about jazz, improvisation and musical styles. The foundation for all of the Satellite Primos is a solid rhythm section with piano, guitar, bass and drums. They usually include about 4 horn players and one or two vocalists. Sometimes there are students who move around because they play more than one instrument and sometime there is extra percussion because there is a strong focus on Latin jazz as well as Salsa. We also encourage students to bring in any songs that they have written and the band can workshop these original compositions.

Of course it is all about learning to perform and each group performs on a regular basis. They play at community, school and cultural events. Los Primos project also sponsors 2 or 3 events per year and as the bands get tight, they will start to attract invitations to perform for other events.

Dart Primos

In May of 2015 our Satellite Primos groups from Tantallon and Rockingham took a musical study tour to Cuba. They traveled to Holguin to take part in the Romerías de Mayo International Youth Arts Festival. They also spent a day with the music students at the Bayamo Arts School and presented a concert together.
