2001

It was time to go to Cuba with some students from Nova Scotia. We needed a fund-raiser. The Los Primos Raffle was born to give away a trip to Cuba and help us get to Cuba. The draw needed to be a public event of course so the Los Primos Dance for All Ages was presented for the first time at the Olympic Community Hall, across from Musicstop in Halifax.

The trip to Cuba in April of 2001 included 27 Canadian Primos and 9 adults. A ten day Musical Study Tour we called it. We went to Amadeo Roldan and were reunited with the Los Primos kids from 2000. We went to Cienfuegos and had a clinic with Ivan Garcia the leader of Aragoncitos. We had a roof top concert with full lights and PA. We jammed in the upstairs of a building that was being renovated... just one extension chord and one light bulb. We hosted a reception at ICAP and the Canadian Ambassador came to see us. We played a concert at the Amadeo Roldan for the first time.

Los Primos 2001 tours Ontario. The Milk International Children’s Festival of the Arts takes place in Toronto every May. Los Primos were a featured musical act and so we toured around Ontario after the festival. The Cubans had clinics at Humber College and performed with the some of the Humber high school program students. They saw Niagara Falls, which is a dream for many Cubans. They played at the Horseshoe Tavern on Queen St., the Guelph Music Festival but the best time was had in Kingston. KoKomo’s was packed all night and the Cuban kids were stars.
2001 was also the year of the first HavanaFax band ever. Chicoy, Greco, Tony and Avi came to Nova Scotia to teach at the Acadia Jazz Camp and tour the province afterwards.
