Jazz East Out Reach

Jazz East is without a doubt the biggest force behind the depth of the Jazz Community in Nova Scotia. Thanks to the vision and energy of Artistic Director, Susan Hunter, Halifax boasts one of the most vibrant jazz scenes in Canada. You can find live jazz most nights of the week in this small city on the Atlantic.

Los Primos is happy to be an outreach program of Jazz East and our relationship has produced many great shows for the people who attend the Atlantic Jazz Festival.

Starting with Los Primos ’98, the festival has presented many show with both Cuban and Canadian Primos. We are looking forward to next summer when for the first time we will present and Big Band with Canadians and Cubans playing together.

Jazz East is also playing and important roll by bringing groups from Cuba to satisfy our appetite for Cuban music. Last year the Jazz Festival opening night show featured the Second Cousins, the Canadian Primos, Latin Groove and the one and only Sierra Maestra from Havana.

They are one of the most important Cuban groups to play the traditional son music with tres, guitar, bass, trumpet, bongo, conga, guiro and vocals. Formed in 1976 and still going this group has traveled the world.

Jazz East also presented the Afro Cuban All Stars lead by Juan de Marcos of Buena Vista fame. The concert in October was completely sold out and the crowd loved it. This group is outstanding and treated the audience to a first set that combined the old sound of the early Cuban big bands of the 50’s with the modern sounds of latin jazz and salsa. The second set let the people dance to some of the hottest modern salsa anywhere today.
