Los Primos is about bringing people together. Not only do we create a cross-cultural bond between musicians in Cuba and Canada but also we are creating cross-generational bonds between young and old in our own community.

The annual Los Primos Dance for All Ages is a rare opportunity for families to get out and spend an evening together. Grand parents, parents and kids dancing together. Young and old musicians perform together. In Cuba people party together young and old yet in our society we have segregated ourselves from the kids. We need to take a look at that.

Los Primos has also been a catalyst for creating a sense of community amongst our young musician. From Yarmouth to Glace Bay we have band students involved. They sell raffle tickets, they attend Jazz Camp, they attend Nova Scotia Honour Jazz, and they keep in touch with each other on the Internet, between sessions of these special events. We are part of a growing jazz community in Nova Scotia.

In these days of over globalization we need to start looking inside our own communities for growth and nurture the talent that we have right here. What motivates people to do things within their communities....passion! Cuba has a great sense of community and if you want to understand Cuba better, please look at the following website.

Los Primos also brings the community together when we tour the province with a Cuban band. There are so many people who come out wish the project well and offering to help and donating instruments or money. Again the adult and the kids come out together see the show.

When we travel across Nova Scotia we often billet the Cubans with families of band members who have been selling raffle tickets and they get to meet the Cuban students who they helped to bring to Canada.

Then there is the music. This picture shows members of Los Primos 2000 and Jorge Chicoy of HavanaFax, jammin’ with Scott Macmillan at the Red Shoe in Mabou. What a night that was in Mabou. When asked what was their favourite concert of the tour, these guys said, “Mabou, because we felt like the people where there to listen to the music.” That’s Cape Breton for you.
